The difficulties with mattress shopping

We try to make it a little better by letting you lay down on all of our options and doing our best to be informative about what is hidden beneath you. Here is an article written by a man who just wants the truth about sleep surfaces.

Memory Foam Information:

Memory Foam is a heat-sensitive, visco-elastic polyurethane foam. At room temperature memory foam is harder than at skin temperature, which causes it to soften on contact and mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. The foam also holds its shape temporarily - a hand pressed into memory foam will leave a clear impression when removed.

Memory Foam was developed for use in the space program. The hope was that memory foam, because of its ability to distribute pressure across the entire surface, could ease the pressure of extreme G-forces.

While memory foam was never used in the space program, it was subsequently used in medical applications, for example where a patient suffered from pressure sores or had to be bed-bound for a long period of time. Initially memory foam was too expensive for general use.

In recent years visco-elastic memory foam has become cheaper to produce and is now widely available for the home bedroom. The most common domestic applications of memory foam are in mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers … A memory foam mattress is usually denser than an ordinary foam mattress. This makes it more supportive …

Unique Properties: Slow Recovery

Wikipedia explains memory foams are unique in two ways. First is the way memory foams respond to changing pressure. Unlike standard foams that spring back immediately, memory foams recover slowly. This "slow recovery" accounts for the way memory foams conform to your body?s shape to reduce pressure points.

Temperature Sensitivity

Second, memory foams are "temperature sensitive." At room temperatures, memory foams are firm. But as your body warms them, memory foams become softer, more pliant and more elastic. So memory foams are also known as "visco-elastic foam." This temperature sensitivity further reduces pressure points, thus increasing support and comfort. Reports note sleepers toss and turn less on memory foams and experience more REM sleep. Both "slow recovery" and "temperature sensitivity" create the feeling you get while lying down on the densest memory foams.

Density? What's the Benefit?

Memory foams range from 3 lbs. to 5.2 lbs. per cubic foot. The greater the density, the better the response. As memory foams increase in weight, the better they perform, the longer they last, and the more they cost. Bedworks offers the highest density Memory Foam: 5.2 lb.

Breathability & Coolness: Built-In

All mattress foams are open-cell, unlike closed cell insulation foams. "Open-cell" foams breathe. The circulating air takes away body heat & humidity constantly.

Foams' Hypo-Allergenic Advantages

Foam mattresses are resilient and inert. They contain NO noxious gases whatsoever. Mattress foams, unlike organic materials, are allergen-free. They do not mildew or cause allergies. For asthma sufferers, foam works wonders.

High Density Foams and High Resiliency Foams

For our beds, we offer 1.8lb high density foam mattresses in twin, double, and queen. We offer 2.6lb high resiliency foam for our 30"x80" daybeds and analytic couches.

Foam Density - the Inside Story:

For specifying foams, two numbers are used: the first is density, the second firmness. Density is lbs/ft3. Pure polyurethane mattress foams range from 1.0 lb/ft3 ["low-dens." for cheap mattress pads] to 1.2, 1.5 ["medium-density"], to 1.8 lb. ["high-density" for excellent mattresses & sofas], and up to 2.6 lbs/ft3 for high resiliency foams. Visco-elastic memory foams are denser, from 3.0 lbs to 5.2 lbs/ft3. The higher the density, the longer foams last, and the more they cost.

Firmness or Plushness?

By tuning ingredients, foam makers can offer several firmnesses [ILDs] at each density, for different uses. ILD is the pounds of pressure it takes to press an 8" dia. steel test plate 1" into a 4" thick sample slab of foam. ILDs range from extremely soft [10 lb. ILD] to very hard [60 lb. ILD]. Mattress foams' ILDs range from 25 lb. [soft] to 35 lb. [med. firm] to 45 lb. [very firm].

Comfort Inside

All mattresses today - spring, futon, latex, air, & water - rely on foams. Springs have large amounts of foams over and under their sharp coils.

No Embarrassing Monster Mattresses

Mattress shops sell monster 12" to 20" thick spring mattresses for a monster profit. These are puffy, so-called "pillow tops" with low-density foam padding: they also are low in long-term comfort, health, and useful life. They carry only a limited 5 to 10-yr warranty. Stores price them for $1100-$2500 a set. Worst of all, their boxsprings cannot fit up many of Boston's staircases.

Longevity: Impressive

In contrast, premium foam mattresses appear a much better value. Bedworks' High Resiliency and Memory Foam Mattresses carry 20-year Warranties. They cost less, are healthier, slimmer and more attractive, easier to move, and guaranteed to last twice as long as spring mattresses.
